VNC issue when trying to launch terminal - works as root

edited Apr 22, 2025 4:44AM in Linux Operating System (MOSC) 9 commentsAnswered ✓

On prem OL8 servers primarily as I don't believe we ever had this issue with OL7 and haven't tested on OL9 yet.

Maybe I should update my terminology to be tigervnc also as still issuing vncserver but the issue I am having is after establishing my session using vncviewer and when trying to launch terminal (I guess it's 'Gnome Terminal?') it just spins and doesn't do anything. This is when using one of our main accounts tied to AD that we have integrated via SSSD. So my workaround at the moment is to start a vncserver as root and then use it and in the terminal window it opens I then 'su - userid' for example.

Howdy, Stranger!
