Has there been a request to increase the field length of MLNM and ALPH?

Has there been a request to increase the field length of MLNM and ALPH? It is hard to fit the Alpha and Mailing Name for non US Customers/Vendors (ie: China/India) into 40 characters. We have to do a lot of abbreviating. Wondering if this was ever requested as an enhancement.
