What is the purpose of the offer expiration date?

We do not use CG but are exploring turning on the online offer functionality so we can add attachments on the offer page.

I'm curious what the offer expiration date does, especially within TAM? If the date passes, does it stop the recruiter or manager from accepting the offer or generating letters? It is a required field, so want to make sure whatever date populates there is not going to hinder any of the users from proceeding with hiring process if the date passes.

We're on 9.2.47 and PT 8.60.13
