Lot Control Inventory using designated "Consuming" location on Routing

The documentation is very clear on Lot Control, Commitment Methods, and Backflushing setup and processing. My question is if anyone has had to "recommit" a Parts List (after initial attached/committed) that has items set to lot control with stock location / lot number.

1. Is the only feasible way to start is by deleting the item from the parts list?
2. And, with a consuming location on the routing, how would it know the logic (lowest lot, most qty, etc.) to attach the correct location/lot?

I know Orchestration is good, but is this the only option if the user wants to keep the Consuming location?
