Change Useful life of an asset in Oracle and have a retrospective adjustment

I have amended the UL of an asset from 10-15 years hoping it would create a credit to depreciation for prior periods, however it has only changed the remaining depreciation amount. How can i change the asset so it creates a credit retrospectively?
