How does XML transfer EBS work order data into production scheduling for execution?

I am trying to understand the role of XML in the integration between Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) and Production Scheduling. In OPM, work orders are created in EBS and then need to be transferred into Production Scheduling for detailed scheduling. How exactly does XML handle this transfer of work order data from EBS to Production Scheduling, and at what stage does it come into play (data extraction, import, or publishing back)? Also, from where can I find XML format?
