Understanding Miscellaneous Transaction Type and Source Interaction

I've been trying to understand how the two fields 'Type' and 'Source' interact on the Miscellaneous Transaction (INVTTMTX) form. I know under 'Setup' → 'Transaction' → 'Source Types' is where the type is created. I also know if I pick a 'Type' that is created under the Account Alias Transaction Type I can find the LoV items from the Source field under the 'Account Aliases' form. What I'm not sure is how these two fields are connected, if I wanted to make a new item for the 'Source' field.
