Options for keeping Line Number consistent between 850 and 810

I think the traditional advice has been to populate a User Reserved field from the EDI map with the Line Number, so it can flow through to the 810 table. I've also seen advice to read the 850 table from the EDI map using the LITM to obtain the Line Number.

Wondering if there are any other options if these two options are not ideal for a customer of mine. They have a customer who requires the line number to stay consistent.
