Setup of a new doc type that is used for manual tax entries (similar to JE)

Has anyone created a specific doc type that is used for specific manual entries? Year End federal and state income tax entries are done using a JE but would like to have a doc type that can be used specifically for these entries, can this be done and how? Is it just creating a doc type in the 11/DC udc?
