Is there a way to cancel a kit component that's been backordered?

In E1 9.2.5 - The component was set as required at the time the order was entered, but even changing it to optional does not allow it to be cancelled. Is it possible to do this after the fact?

I've tried going into the kit component detail - it won't allow me change the quantity, but it will allow me to change the last/next statuses, it just doesn't save them.

Any other options or set up I might be missing that would allow it?
