How to make VBC editable

in Siebel System Admin, Install and Upgrade (MOSC) Question

I'm planning to use my VBC for searching purpose, user can enter any value in field and press the button to search.
I've created VBC with class "CSSCMUBCVPopup" and there is no BS in BC user prop. The applet is form applet with Type "Edit". I can see in UI, fields in VBC are read only. Is there any way to make VBC fields editable, so that it can be used for searching puprpose?
