Report Server/App Server Connection when Printing Reports directly to Printer

We are on FSCM 9.2.23, PT 8.57.12 and having some inconsistent issues when sending directly to the printer. What we are trying to figure out is does the report servers try to check against app servers when a report is going to the printer. I would be thinking of SQR or BI Publisher. I am new to administration of the report/app/web servers so not exactly sure if there is some connection.
