PSPPYRUN cobol failing with "INVALID CHARACTER AT END OF DATA" error

Environment: HCM 9.2, PeopleTools 8.57, Image 17, MS SQL Server, Windows (all tiers)

Problem:

Payroll calc (PSPPYRUN) fails in lower environment with bind variable mismatch. COBSQL trace shows the SQL statement PSPEARRY_S_ERN has 5 bind placeholders, but the COBOL program passes 6 binds. The 6th bind is a space character (appears to be ORIG_PAYGROUP). Error: RC=8080 "An invalid bind variable number was specified."
