Best way to stop leave accruals when an employee is on unpaid leave?

Hi all - looking for some suggestions on ways that others may have configured the system to stop an employee from accruing PTO when out on extended leave. I assume we can just enter a term row for plan type 52 and then an elect row when they return, but I was looking for something more automatic.
