Receipt Push process doesn't update Asset id in INTFC_PRE_AM

We have an issue where Asset getting created from via receipt push process (RECV_02) and if the 'Number' is not filled in Asset details the AMIF1000 process doesn't create Asset id to update on INTFC_PRE_AM which cause issue on cancellation of receipt the Asset get's created with intfc_type 'RET' instead of 'ADJ'. Not sure why process AMPS1000 checks for asset id with 'number' field. If anyone has encountered anything like this and able to explain the process.
