In our previous article, New to NetSuite | Setting Up Multi-Location Inventory (MLI) we explored the how to setup Multi-Location Inventory (MLI) feature. Building on that, this article will delve deeper into the Inventory Distribution aspect of MLI. Specifically, we will discuss the differences between Manual and Simple Inventory Distribution and provide a demo on how to perform these distributions.
Manual Inventory Distribution
Manual inventory distribution requires a hands-on approach. It involves manually selecting the items, quantities, and locations for distribution. This method provides a high level of control and customization, making it suitable for businesses with specific distribution needs or those that deal with unique or high-value items.
Steps for Manual Inventory Distribution
- Navigate to Transactions > Inventory > Distribute Inventory.
- Click Manual.
- Fill out the following fields:
- The table at the bottom of the page should show Items for distribution and Total Stock however my page is showing blank since I don’t have items to be distributed. The highlighted columns are my locations, a user just has to enter the quantity you want to allocate to that location.
Click Save.
Simple Inventory Distribution
Simple inventory distribution is a more automated approach. It uses predefined rules and criteria to distribute inventory across locations. This method is ideal for businesses with straightforward distribution needs, aiming to streamline the process and reduce manual intervention.
Steps for Manual Inventory Distribution
- Navigate to Transactions > Inventory > Distribute Inventory.
- Click Simple.
- Fill out the following fields:
Note: As you can see here there is only ONE field for location. This is because on Simple Inventory Distribution all items will just get distributed to a SINGLE location. This is useful if you enabled Multi-Location Inventory feature in preparation of having multiple locations but currently have a single location.
Knowing Multi-Location Inventory system enhances your ability to manage stock effectively, meet customer demands, and optimize overall operations. Whether you choose manual or simple distribution, each method has its own benefits and applications, making it crucial to understand both to maximize your inventory management capabilities.
