NSC | Update Invoice in a Closed Period > G/L Impact Error

edited Aug 21, 2025 7:52AM in Accounting / ERP

Scenario:

The user is required to updates the following fields on an invoice with the following details and received an error message upon hitting save.

  • Invoice Date: January 15, 2022
  • Posting Period: December 2021
  • Current Period Status: December 2021 is Closed
  • Change Needed: Update a non-G/L impacting field such as a custom dropdown or project reference

The G/L impact of a transaction in a closed period cannot be changed

Solution:

In this scenario, the transaction date (January 15, 2022) falls outside the assigned posting period (December 2021). If the NetSuite accounting preference "Allow Transaction Date Outside of Posting Period" is set to Disallow, the system flags this mismatch and treats it as a potential change to the general ledger—even if the actual change has no G/L impact. Since the posting period is closed, NetSuite blocks the change and displays the error.
