Saved Search on Custom Record gets duplicates when field references transaction field

I have a custom record that contains a field of type List/Record where the list is "Transaction". This field contains purchase orders.

If I create a saved search on this custom record that includes the purchase order field, all is fine. But if I instead add a field "purchase order: transaction number" I get duplicate records returned.

Any idea why and how I can fix it?
