Sales Order Items items to Inventory Items. How to get the relationship?

As part of a fulfillment company, I am also tasked with getting item numbers that correspond with Order's items. I was able to get a list of inventory items. But, when I query for 1 item on a sales order via the internal id, I receive no records found. I am currently using the web service for NetSuites and would appreciate an explanation on how the items work and .NET logic (if possible) for the web service to retrieve inventory items that are sales order items. Thanks.
