How to book Shopify Gift Card revenue in NetSuite Connector?

edited Aug 13, 2025 6:53AM in Ask A Guru 12 comments

We have just started with NetSuite but have been using Shopify for several years.

In the SuiteAnswer link Configuring Gift Cards for NetSuite Connector, the article advises: 'The leading practice is to handle the sale of gift cards and certificates in the same way as any other item using an SKU.'

I would have thought that taking money for a Gift Card would have created a liability that becomes a sale only when the Gift Card is redeemed. Is this SuiteAnswer advice suggesting to book the amount of the Gift Card as revenue?

If the amount of the Gift Card is booked as revenue, then doesn't that mean that the liability for redeeming it is not captured on the books? When the Gift Card is redeemed and 'Gift Card Redeem' for instance could be set up as a Payment Method for Shopify but what GL account would it connect to?

Howdy, Stranger!
