How to add Inventory Items for Assembly and BOM creation?

I am currently running into issues creating Assemblies and BOMS and understanding how these are connected. I can create assembly items, but I do not see where to add inventory items to the Assembly. Once this is done I can then link the assembly to the BOM? I have created a BOM now but it only allows me to add assemblies to the BOM. Does anyone have input, I am sure I am missing parts of the process but everything I research has not given me a clear process.
