How do we correct a Sales Order when the Opportunity linked was incorrect?

After linking a sales order to an opportunity, and saving the sales order, we can no longer edit the opportunity field. So if the user linked the incorrect opportunity to the sales order we are unable to correct it. The linked opportunity field becomes read only.
