Best Practices for Tracking Experimental Products Sampled via “Sample Item” in NetSuite
We’re currently using NetSuite to sample experimental products to customers. These products don’t have formal item codes yet, so we use a generic item called “Sample Item”, and manually enter the experimental product name or description in the item description field.
We also manage all experimental projects in Formulator, where we track formulation details and internal development progress. However, we’d like to improve how we track the customer-facing lifecycle of these experimental products in NetSuite, including:
- Initial sample sent
- Follow-up samples or larger quantities
- Customer interactions (sales calls, lab work, feedback)
- Commercialization (when the product gets a formal name and item code in NetSuite)
