Issue Description
We have a sales order line that was only partially fulfilled, but the linked special-order Work Order was created and built for only the partial quantity. The remaining sales order quantity is now effectively stranded because NetSuite will not allow us to create another special-order Work Order for the same sales order line, and the existing Work Order quantity can no longer be increased.
Example
Sales Order: SO1446573
Item: 564922
Sales Order Line: 2
Sales Order Quantity: 163
Quantity Fulfilled: 142
Remaining Quantity: 21
Linked Work Order: WO067422
Work Order Quantity: 142
Built Quantity: 142
Unbuilt Quantity: 0
Work Order Status: Built
Created From: SO1446573
The sales order line originally had a special-order Work Order created for 142 units. Those 142 units were built and fulfilled, but the sales order line was for 163 units, leaving 21 units still open.
The problem is that we cannot find a native way to create supply for the remaining 21 units while preserving the original sales order line.
We have tested the following in Sandbox:
- The existing Work Order quantity cannot be changed from 142 to 163 because the Work Order has already been built.
- Attempting to create a second special-order Work Order for the same sales order line results in the following error:
A Drop Ship/Special Order already exists for sales order SO1446573, line 2.
- We also investigated reversing the Assembly Build. The original transaction is in a closed accounting period, and we cannot delete the Assembly Build.
- Attempting an Assembly Unbuild is not viable because the 142 finished assemblies have already been consumed/shipped. NetSuite returns a bin availability error when attempting the unbuild.
Business Impact
This creates a stranded sales order balance. The original Work Order has supplied all 142 units it was created for, but the sales order still has 21 units remaining.
Because the sales order line is still associated with the original special-order Work Order, the remaining quantity does not appear to have a native path to receive additional special-order supply.
We specifically do not want to delete the original sales order line or move the remaining quantity to a new line because these orders are integrated through EDI and changing the original line structure may cause downstream integration issues.
Questions for NetSuite Support
What is the correct way to partially fulfill with a work order? Should we create a work order for the whole quantity, only build what we can, and then leave the work order open with the remaining until the item is back in stock?
What is the supported NetSuite procedure for fixing this scenario?
Specifically, how should we supply the remaining 21 units on the same original sales order line after its linked special-order Work Order has been fully built for less than the sales order quantity?
Is there a supported way to either:
- Increase or reopen the existing Work Order after it has been built,
- Remove/release the completed Work Order's special-order relationship from the remaining sales order demand,
- Create an additional special-order Work Order for the remaining quantity, or
- Convert the remaining quantity back to normal stock sourcing without replacing or recreating the sales order line?
We are looking for the supported process that preserves the existing sales order line and its fulfillment history.
