Poor performance when bursting is used to distribute output via email. Why?

We have a simple ESS report to select AP invoices and email the details to suppliers as confrimation invoice is received.
The query on its own runs in a matter of seconds but when bursting is turned on the process can take upto 20 minutes irrespective of whether we are processing 2 invoices or 200.
Has anybody expereinced a similar issue and found a way to improve the performance of the bursting step?
