Allow API access to dataset edit definition

We would like to be able after duplicating a dataset to change the dataset definition via an API (a program). In dataset edit definition we can select new analysis queries which takes time and we would like to automate this based on the folder or the name of the duplicated dataset. As a starting point we would like to know where the XML or metadata from datasets are stored and if we can explore their content.

We are striving for more than 3 years (and unfortunately there is no change in newest release of OAS 2023 - this OAS release does not even have first features of REST API introduced during 2022 in OAC - we just learned that this REST API is "bounded" to cloud deployment, thus will not be available in OAS) with inability to programmatically "manipulate" DV objects  and automate repetitive DV task (connected with DevOps operations and governance).

Particularly we are missing in OAS following API :

1) Manipulation of data sets

• Modification/Creation of data set
• Change connection objects for tables in data set
• Change data set ownership
• Upload/Refresh file based data sets
• Refresh cached data sets (based on DB connection)
• Possibility to purge BI Server cache, connected with particular data set
• Getting data set definitions (get different properties of data sets)
• Setting/Getting ACL for data set

2)Manipulation of DV workbooks

• Listing DV projects and their key properties (for example data sets used by DV workbook)
• Ability to change key properties

3) Data Flows

• Ability to run/monitor data flows
• Ability to monitor/change jobs for data flows

4) System Settings 

• programmatically change system setting (showing up in System Settings in DV console )

It can seem, that this Idea is duplicate to existing ones (for example this one: https://community.oracle.com/products/oracleanalytics/discussion/9976/api-for-data-visualization-in-oracle-analytics-server-oac), but it is not - I again stress, that this functionality is required for Oracle Analytics Server (on-premise version of Oracle Analytics platform).

I hope, that this Idea will get Product Management attention.

Description

"Traditional" OBIEE components (part of Oracle Analytics solution) offers quite rich API (Web Services) for performing programatically various tasks.

Unfortunatelly there is no API (at least I have not found anything in documentation for Oracle Analytics Server) for Data Visualization part. So it would be highly wanted to have API (REST, Web Services...) which offers following funcionality :

• Manipulation of data sets
  • Modification/Creation
  • Upload/Refresh file based data sets
  • Possibility to purge BI Server cache, connected with particular data set
• DV projects
  • Listing DV projects and their key properties
  • Ability to change key properties
• Data Flows
  • Ability to run/monitor data flows
  • Ability to monitor/change jobs for data flows
• Snapshots 
  • Create/Apply/Download/Upload snapshots
• System Settings - programatically change system setting (showing up in System Settings in DV console /analytics/systemsettings/)

There is already Idea created "REST API for Oracle Analytics Cloud" (https://cloudcustomerconnect.oracle.com/posts/4fc31f00db), but I dont consider my idea as duplicate to this one - it is more wider and it deals with Oracle Analytics Server (thus on-prem version).

 

Use Case and Business Need

Ability to programatically via API perform various tasks in Data Visualization, making the task and maintanance of OAS/OAC environment more effiective. For some repetetive tasks (like reload/upload new version of file-based data set) is mandatory requirement.

both created by me (one is pretty old one). I think, that what you are requiring in this Idea is "subset" of what is in Ideas above. So pls - for synergy - vote for my Ideas - this will give better chance to be implemented.

We can see a developer option when clicking on inspect on dataset which shows the XML where we would like to make our changes but the APPLY button remains always greyed out / seems we cannot make changes there. Would it be possible to use this functionality?
