Action Links in Graphs

I have an analysis where one of the columns contains an Action Link to other BI content. This is defined in the Interaction tab of Column Properties.

I display this column in two different views on the Results tab - one is in a table; the other is in a pie chart.

The action link works perfectly in the tabular report. However, it does not work in the pie chart.

There are other existing reports with this same setup where the action link works in both the tabular report and the pie chart. It's just not working in the new pie chart that I created.

I compared the contents of both to see where the difference is. But I am not finding it.

Any suggestions on what I might be missing?

I appreciate any guidance on this. It's been bugging me for days. Thanks!!

And what OBIEE are you using? 10g, 11g, 12c? (including patchlevel version)

The one not working is a new one you just built and the old one workings were already existing?

It's version 11g Release 1 (11.1.1)

The one that isn't working is an addition to the existing reports that are working.

In fact, I noticed something else. I added a column to an existing report. This report has other data points where the action link works on both the table and the pie chart. The new column does not behave the same way. The action link works on the table, but not the pie chart.

Strange... I am sure there is something basic I didn't set up the right way.

If your action link depends on other column values or if you are passing those column values as parameters, then all columns mentioned should be in your view (e.g. in your piechart) for the action foto be visible and working.

E.g. if you have the table:

Country,Year,#Sales

and you define an action on sales passing Country as parameter.

But in the pie chart you show only #Sales per Year, then the action will not be visible since the Country is not defined in the view.

That is definitely food for thought.

In my world, the original chart had three data points - each of which depends on a Status Code value. I am adding a fourth data point which is defined by a new value for the Status Code. The action links for the original three data points work great on the pie chart, whereas the new one does not.

So, yes, the new data point depends on another column value as in your example.

The status code, along with the four data point values are all defined in the view.

I noticed that in the "Pies" dimension, it just says Measure Labels. Still being new to OBIEE, I am not entirely sure what Measure Labels means. Is it possible that my new data point is not an element of Measure Labels yet? Not even sure I know what that question means, but I thought I'd ask.

In OBIEE Language data points are divided between Attributes and Metrics.

Metrics are Agregable Measures, Attributes are fact description.

In my example, the four data points (the original three plus the new one I created) are Measures, and each depends on the value of Status Code (an attribute).

The measures and the attribute are all defined in the view. They are given in the "Excluded" area which I thought might be a problem, although the first three measures are there, and the action links work on those just fine.

I have since noticed that if I move the new measure (the problem child) from "Excluded" to "Slices", the action link actually works in the pie chart. The only difference is that the legend now includes the dollar amount in the legend, which they don't want.

That's because the action is defined in the new measure.

So If I understood it correctly:

You have two measures e.g. Qty, ValueinUSD

You have a pie Chart with Qty ad Measures and Status Code as slices -> this will show you quantity and will enable all actions defined in Qty column

If you want to have a Chart showing ValueinUSD and Status just remove Qty from measures and put ValueinUSD column there.

If you instead want to change the behaviour of the Qty measure then you need to define the new interaction in Criteria Tab-> Qty column properties -> Interaction

The table we have contains (among other things) a dollar amount and a status code. The status code puts the transaction into a particular category.

The tabular report and the pie chart display the sum of all dollar amounts with status code "A", status code "B", status code "C", and status code "D".

Originally there were only three status codes. They added a new one, so my goal is to include that in OBIEE as well.

The first three were developed by my predecessor who is no longer working here. Those three have action links that work in both the table and the pie chart. The action link I created only works in the table report.

Each of these four amounts is included in the Criteria tab with a separate formula {e.g, if status code = 'A', then return sum (amounts)}

Hopefully that helps to explain the setup that we have.

Hope this helps. I tried to get the action link and condition in the same screen shot.

The link itself works. It just doesn't function when that column is referenced on the pie chart. I keep thinking there is an option or checkbox I am missing below that will allow it to function on the pie chart.

The only time it works there is if I move the column value out of Excluded and into the Slices. But then it displays the value in the legend which they don't want. Also, the other columns that work properly are still in Excluded, so I am thinking this one should too. Thanks for taking the time to look into this!!
