In Oracle Analytics Server, workbook thumbnails can appear on the Data Visualization (DV) Home page for users who do not have effective access to those workbooks.
This can occur when a workbook retains permissions (for example, BI Consumer access) that differ from the permissions of the folder hierarchy in which it resides. As a result, a user may see a workbook thumbnail on the DV Home page, but be unable to navigate to the workbook through the catalog or open it because they do not have access to the folder path.
According to Oracle Support, this behavior is currently working as designed, and administrators or workbook owners are expected to ensure that workbook permissions remain consistent with the permissions of the target folder when workbooks are copied or moved.
However, from an end-user perspective, it is confusing and inconsistent to see a workbook presented as available content when it cannot actually be accessed. Users generally expect that content displayed on the DV Home page is content they can open and use.
Requested enhancement:
The DV Home page should only display workbook thumbnails for users who have effective access to the workbook, including any required folder-path permissions. If a user cannot open or navigate to a workbook, the workbook should not be displayed on the Home page.
Benefits:
- Improved user experience and reduced confusion.
- Consistent behavior between Home page visibility and actual access permissions.
- Reduced administrative effort required to maintain permission consistency after content is moved or copied.
- Better alignment with the principle that users should only see content they can access.
