Hi, fairly sure I have seen page breaks work when exporting to pdf, but that may have been 11g.....

From what you are expecting I would say that you want the report ordered by these three columns but only column A as your section.

Thank you for spelling it out again. I thought it was clear from my comment and my screenshot.

It works perfectly fine as my screenshots show. It just works precisely as designed.

    Ana, thanks for the reply.

Yes, you are misunderstanding this behavior, if the three columns are part of the section, then a change in one of the columns is a new section, 0-0-0 is different than 0-1-0, hence the new section. From what you are expecting I would say that you want the report ordered by these three columns but only column A as your section.

I do understand these are different sections; this was part of my assumption. Each section is defined by a set of columns and the unique combination of values of these columns.

This is documentation on page break behavior from 11g (I'm assuming the intended behavior of page breaks is preserved between versions, and I couldn't find this for 12c):

    https://docs.oracle.com/middleware/11119/biee/BIEBB/raas-views020.htm#BABBJCGG

    .

Here's what it says about inserting page breaks; I've added emphasis in red, comments in blue:

Innermost Column — Break at the innermost column, which inserts a page break between every sectionOutermost Column — Break at the outermost column, which inserts a page break when the section label in the outermost column changes. When the value of an outermost column changes, the value of the inner column is also considered changed. Therefore, setting page breaks at the innermost column inserts manual page breaks between every section.I see a page break after each section, even if the section label in the outermost column changes -- this is not expected based on the description of the behaviorFolder.Column — For example, Markets.Region, or Products.Brand. Inserts a page break when the section label in the specified column changes. This option is available only when the Sections drop target contains a column.I see a page break after each section for every column I select, even if the section label for the selected column doesn't change -- this is not expected based on the description of the behavior

Regardless of the option selected in this drop down list, I get a page break after each section. According to the behavior described in the docs, I should only see page breaks when the section label changes.

It just works precisely as designed.

         - This made my day.

"How does a car engine work?"

         "It works as designed."

I have given that: You can't expect the tool to behave as you think it should. It works as designed. If you don't like that then use BI Publisher.
Too long, didn't read. Your problem in a nutshell is THIS ---^^

I appreciate you responding, but these are non-answers. I'm only trying to understand the issue I described. Please don't respond if me asking for understanding irritates you.

It works perfectly fine as my screenshots show.

This is helpful because it's likely the issue will be resolved if I update to the latest version.

It's not really non-answers but rather one of the main reasons why so many analytical projects fail. Content, substance and even data is ignored and sacrificed on the altar or GUI fiddling.

And with regards to the car engine...well you can try to run a Ferrari V12 in first gear at 9000 revs. The engine will work as designed until it blows up

I agree with you 100%. This is not the best use of OBIEE. Unfortunately, this is the constraint I'm given. Solve problem X given constraints Y.

Again, based on the behavior described in the docs, page breaks should work a certain way. I can't get it to work they way the docs say it should work; I see different behavior. Sure, it's working exactly as it was designed but I'm not experienced enough to know if this is a flaw in the design or something stupid that I just overlooked on my end.

If someone out there reading this has access to OBIEE 12.2.1.0.0 and can test page breaks, this would be helpful in identifying if the problem is OBIEE or something I did wrong when building my report.

I appreciate the feedback and responses I've received so far; I'd like to drill down and find the root cause of this issue.

There are always bugs. But one thing you've never commented on: Is BIP really no option? BIP Reports can be integrated into dashboards just like analyses and react to prompts as well. Maybe you're just trying to saddle the wrong horse here.

Well, we're converting hundreds of reports to OBIEE. When the report must be pixel perfect, we build them using BI Pub. We avoid using BI Pub if possible, and try to do as much as we can in OBIEE, even if that means a strange work-around. This is due to the nature of the project, the large number of reports we need to convert, and to prevent the client from defaulting to BI Pub for every report. They are focusing too much on layout, when the data is what's important. We push back trying to get them to realize that having the right data whats important and that there are inherent limitations in OBIEE. After all, it is an analytics tool. We understand this, but it's a struggle trying to get the client on the same page.

Part of our issue is that we have a lot of reports that fall in a gray area. They can be built in OBIEE even though BI Pub is arguably a better option. Doing most of these in BI Pub would probably double our work load which we are trying to avoid do to the nature of the project.

God I so feel your pain. That literally sounds like most of my projects over the last years that switched from one solution to another...
