Hello Everyone,

I have Folders F1, F2, F3 under shared folders and I would like to move them under different folder (Z1) under shared without breaking existing dashboards.

Current:

Shared Folders ---> F1

                                F2

                                F3

Required:

Shared Folders ----> Z1---> F1

                                            F2

                                            F3

Appreciate all ur inputs.

Thanks in Advance!

    It's best practice (in my humble opinion) to have similar catalog structures in order to avoid these type of issues. There is no straightforward way to change the references. One way would be to modify everything manually and the other would be to do an XML search and replace in catalog manager (please backup your catalog first before you attempt this).

  • There would be a way, which I would highly suggest you will never adopt because you will regret it soon or late: create shortcuts

    I almost feel bad even just mentioning it. That would be a quick fix while you start doing the proper changed (as Joel said, manually or by search&replace).

    Do not keep shortcuts on the long term in your system, you will really pay the price of that approach at some point as nothing is what (where) it seem to be anymore!

    Thank you for your inputs.

    I am trying to approach it in a different way.Creating a folder directly under Root folder.I was wondering about the challenges with this approach.

    appreciate your inputs.

    Catalog Root-->

                             New Folder(X1)

                             Shared Folders

                             System Folders

                             User Folders.

    one of the concern is, it will be shown only in Admin view. appreciate ur help.

    What will that change? Do you still want to move the content?

    Also: What do you mean "it will be shown only in Admin view"??

    Hi Christian,

    Reason for above request  to have separate folders for each Business area, current development is done for Asia business, we want to create one more for Europe.

    Initial thought was to create Asia folder under shared and move existing work under it.

    Since there is no direct option to move folder contents to parent folder without breaking existing dashboards and reports.I am thinking to create one more folder under catalog root.this way i will be creating objects for upcoming projects(Europe and International business under it).

    ---> I want to create one more folder under catalog root which works similar to Shared folders.

    current challenge:

    Folder is not visible in User view, when we change it to Admin View folder is displayed.

    Appreciate any inputs

    As initially said it's a good idea to think about a coherent strategy of structuring your folders. Area / Geo folders isn't bad if your business is structured this way.

    Re "only visible in Admin" - that's the other thing you should think about from the beginning: How to properly authorize folder access. So obvious question: Are your permissions correct?

    I would highly suggest you don't take this option.

    The tool expect the catalog to have 3 main folders: shared, system, users. Another folder at this level isn't the natural way of doing things, for the tool it will not really exist in most of the places and only Catalog Manager can see it. So do not go into that.

    If till now you developed everything for a single region and now you want a "by region" split of content, add the regions into "shared" and move all the existing into the "asia" folder. Do a single search/replace and done. "asia" will work fine and your system is ready for all other regions.

    As per my understanding search/Replace works only for renaming or replacing the existing content.

    Can you please let me know how can it be used to move folders to parent folder(New).

    Appreciate ur inputs.

    Thank you!

  • Search & replace will not move anything, that's sure.

    When you move things, OBIEE doesn't update references. All the internal references between the various objects (pages, analysis, filters etc.) are full paths.

    With search & replace you can update all those references easily instead of having to manually update tons of things.
