OBIEE 12.2.1.3 to 12.2.1.4 (in-place upgrade). Any guiding document please ..

HI Gurus,

As mentioned in subject, i am attempting an in-place upgrade from 12.2.1.3 to 12.2.1.4. I came across Oracle's documentation (link below), but at some places feel it is not much clear, like should we specify different Oracle_Home for 12.2.1.4 software install etc.

The documentation is very stratighforward.

In terms of the home you need to watch out with the directory structures and basically if you installed your 12.2.1.3 wrong, then an in-place upgrade probably isn't the best idea for you.

Thanks Chris, below is how the existing directory structure of ours (for OBIEE 12.2.1.3)

/obi/Oracle/Middleware/Oracle_Home/user_projects/domains/bi.

I just ran the install wizard for 12.2.1.3. and the above is auto generated (only Oracle_Home i did specify in the 3rd step of process).

Also you said "if you installed your 12.2.1.3 wrong, then an in-place upgrade probably isn't the best idea for you."

Are there any risks if i continue with the current directory structure for in-place upgrade to 12.2.1.4. because you saying "not the best idea" but not totally ruling out the in-place upgrade like it will FAIL etc.

Another thing, once we stabilize on 12.2.1.4, we have plans for an in-place upgrade eventually to OAS 6.4.

Please share your thoughts if we heading in the right direction and also if i choose to continue with current directory structure (/obi/Oracle/Middleware/Oracle_Home/user_projects/domains/bi) , how should i add-in the 12.2.1.4 directory path...

Your install match what Christian called "wrong": your domain is right inside the Oracle home. If you do an in-place upgrade with this kind of folder structure, you will not be able to delete the 12.2.1.3 Oracle home, because it does contain the domain (and this one doesn't move during an in-place upgrade).

You will never be able to correct a wrong folder structure doing in-place upgrades, it will stay wrong till you will do an out-of-place upgrade.

Thanks Gianni, is deleting 12.2.1.3 Oracle Home mandatory to make a successful working 12.2.1.4 instance ? (after in-place). --sorry if this question sounds too naive.

As my current structure is /obi/Oracle/Middleware/Oracle_Home/user_projects/domains/bi,

Now that if i choose to uninstall and re-do entire 12.2.1.3 buildup, please suggest how i should mention "Domains Directory" and "Domain Home" in the above step so that in-place to 12.2.1.4 goes well.

Not mandatory at all, it's just about disk space that it will take, and more in general having a clean folder structure on your disk.

If you do it, you will maybe remember in 1-2 years why you have that kind of folder structure. But somebody else connecting to your server in 6 months knowing that OAS 6.4 is installed and running there, will maybe think it's a good idea to clean up thing and remove that old installation. And there your whole OAS is gone, because you lost the domain.

The domain path is just there in the screenshot you posted. If you look into FMW documentations they will show you a folder structure where the domain is outside the Oracle home. So just pick a path that is outside the Oracle home in that screen.

Look at the picture that Christian posted: /obiee/products/12213 is the Oracle home, /obiee/config/domains is the domains directory. The domains directory is not inside the Oracle home.

By default the path suggested by the config wizard will be inside the Oracle home (<Oracle home>/user_projects/domains).

The domain home is domains directory + domain name, that's why it's not something you can change but it is shown on the screen FYI.

Thank you, so this entire directory structure thing is all about "disk space" and there are no real concerns about the product functionality !!! So keeping this disk space issue aside, am i good to proceed with the in-place to 12.2.1.4 with the current directory structure ? (and eventually another in-place from 12.2.1.4 to OAS 6.4)

Also as both OBIEE 12.2.1.3 and 12.2.1.4 use FMW 12.2.1.3.0 , do i need to install FMW again ?

No.

What Gianni said holds true. The default path is WRONG and goes against what's written in the documentation. config and product home should be split in order to allow proper lifecycle management.
