More options for Data Viz filters

Description

1) Data Viz currently only supports "multi-select" filters, this is not ideal for projects where you only want to select single values.   For example, if you have a canvas designed to show data for a single year, the only way to change the Year on display is either:

  • Add a 2nd Year to the filter and then remove the existing one (your project shows data temporarily for 2 years which is wrong)
  • Remove the current Year selected in the filter and then add the new Year  (your project temporarily tries to show data for all years which is wrong)

We need to have an option for a "single-select" filter so you can only have a max of 1 value selected.

2) There is no way to dynamically assign a default value to a filter e.g. "Current Month".   Currently the filters have to be hard coded with an explicit value which is no use if you open a project in a new month

3) Provide an option to state that a filter is mandatory and cannot be left blank

Use Case and Business Need

With filters that are just "multi-select", the projects you make are not full-proof and can be easily broken by users you share with.   They may not know that filters should contain a single value only or are mandatory

  • Quarter to date reporting of Order Management data to track and manage operational revenue for current period.

  • Totally agree, prompts and also visuals to be used as a filter for embedded versions are a necessary improvement.

  • Over time these filters will become Author filters only. What we plan to deliver later this year is the ability to create customized filters/prompts on the canvas. These filters will have the various abilities that an author might want to expose to consumers, e.g. single vs. multi-selection, force selection, default values, and more.

    Thanks Gaby, great to hear

  • One Other Important feature of Prompt, especially when visualising Timelines is a Slider and Autoplay of that Slider. It becomes an very powerful visualization when analysing changes based on time periods. Not creating another idea as the  Prompt is covered here.

  • If you believe that a slider is an important interaction, I suggest that you will open an idea for it and provide additional details.

  • While these feature are being worked on for Self service Analytics, a partial workaround today is to embed your DV viz in a dashboard, and use dashboard prompts on the same datasource as the DV project. Dashboard prompts will let you achieve all the questions you mention above, including time sliders.

The Classic Dashboard Prompt is old generation and needs upgrade/re-branding to match DV standard. Also, I don't think there is any option for time slider in dashboard prompt, (please see below image) Could you please share the screenshot ?

    Hi Gabby,

Can you identify which items on this idea will be implemented? Not sure if all or just some are planned ideas.

Also, can you expand more on the "over time these filters will become Author filters only". Do we have a visual on what's to come?

We would also want to have the ability to set default values in a filter based on a repository variable. I have created a separate idea for this, but wanted to know if this is already on the pipeline.

    Many thanks! - Angel

  • Hi Angel,

In 5.7 we are introducing a feature called 'on-canvas filters' which is the ability to create filters directly on the dashboard. These filters will have the following capabilities:

    • Filter the list shown to the user
    • Multiselect or single-select
    • Mandatory selection
    • Default value (first in list or custom)

The release will also introduce the ability to fine-tune filters scope to be able to state which filters apply to which viz on the same canvas. In future releases, we are going to enhance these new capabilities with more features (including the ability to create a custom filter bar).

Introducing variables to DV is a separate project, once we will add variables we do plan to use them in the context of these filters.

The new on-canvas filters were shown in the OA Summit roadmap session by Jacques, there will be a video about it in our youtube channel within the next couple of weeks.

    Regards,

    Gabby

    Many thanks!

  • The basic idea here can be implemented using an expression filter (Month = Current Month), and other items were addressed with the on-canvas filters (mandatory and single-select). There are a lot of other valid ideas on the thread, but those will need to be ideas by themselves.
