Description

We want to be able to create and store snapshots through automated methods.

  • Snapshot creation to be driven through a scheduler and/or an event.
  • Storage should not be a constraint for the snapshot so space should be created for the latest snapshot.
  • Where an older snapshot is going to be removed to create such space there should be optional behavior as to the fate of that snapshot.
  • Snapshots can be downloaded to a designated storage area as a result of being removed from the Cloud storage or optionally by the behest of the Administrator.

Use Case and Business Need

Currently the creation of snapshots is reliant on manual intervention. This leads to an exposure when the designated administrator may be indisposed. This need is to reduce the risk of losing recent development work or user driven artifacts.

More details

Current process only enables manual creation and download of snapshots. Snapshots sometimes fail due to insufficient storage being available.

    Is a scheduled task for automation enough or does it need to be an API?  I we considering both... but if we had to deliver one then the other, which would you want first?

    We would prefer having an API so that 1. There is more flexibility to store the backup on a Enterprise server rather than the Admin's computer. 2. The API can be integrated into the Enterprise Automation suite.

    Is there a GA date for the snapshot API?

    We have customers for which we need to synchronize OAC instances once a day between two different OCI regions using snapshots. In case the primary region fails the secondary will become the primary instance. 

    Reguired features to automate this end-to-end:

    - take a snapshot from a selected instance (everything or custom)

    - download/upload/transfer snapshot from/to object store

    - restore snapshot to a (different) selected instance (everything, content only, custom content)

    We just went live with OAC and are in need of automating the ability to create snapshots. It's not ideal to be reliant on your administrator to manually create snapshots. Having the same options via an automated approach that you have when taking snapshot manually will be great. This can also be useful for disaster recovery processes also.
