Results of Another Analysis Filter

Can someone explain to me the nuances of using the filter "is based on results of another analysis"? I am not getting any results no matter how I try this.
I am trying to list volume two ways in one report. One volume field will be values for the customer and the other volume field will be for this customer's industry. I have customer and volume fields listed in analysis A with the filter of a specific customer, and then I have Analysis B that lists industry name and volume fields with a filter on the specific industry. I then try to bring in new volume field in Analysis A that has the filter linked to industry volume field of Analysis B.

Since a company is IN an industry, why not have a logical hierarchy? Then it's a matter of a level-based measure to show the total for the industry and you can add the value of showing not only raw measures, but % contribution or comparison values as well.
You could also just add the volume field twice on the report and one of them is filtered for the industry and one for the company (in the formula) of the column -- but doing it this way limits you in the long run. Either way no need for the extra analysis to filter by ...
The 'filter results based on another analysis' won't let you show the level based (summary) and the detail measure beside one another because it's designed to liimt the records in one report by the presence/absence of records/values in another.

I stumbled on the filter function in the field edit window while waiting for the replay. The only call out is that neither customer or industry could be filtered on the report for this to work properly.
