Is any development happening on DVD product?

Summary
Is any development happening on DVD product?
Content
Since the launch of DVD, updates have been quite frequent (every 2-3 months apart). Since the Jan 2017 update, there hasn't been any new updates?
thanks

Hi!
From what im hearing through the grapevine is that alot development is happeing on ODV.
My understanding is that they are trying to sync functionality between ODV-BICS-VA and so on.

Hi heard there is a new version in the pipeline which was supposed to be released last week or there around, so ideally it isn't too far.
For VA keep something in mind: cloud first, on prem ... maybe at some point. That's generally the way new developments will be, so new things in DVD will first end up in DV / VA in cloud and only at a later time at some point on prem.

I sure hope so. The last feature bearing release for DVD was in Oct 2016 and for VA , its been almost an year! (yikes). I hope the product team this time around gets some of the basic items in - pushdown processing, LDAP or kerberos etc. New Viz are great to have but of no use when you cannot connect to decent sized data sources securely.

Yup. the development cycle for Oracle BI products is painfully slow compared to other BI products in the industry. I had high hopes last October when DVD 2.0 came out but was quickly disappointed to find out that it still does not have basic features that enterprises come to expect (push down processing, Kerberos, LDAP, strong OBIEE integration etc.). I honestly dont get the product team's focus on DVD and VA. btw, just saw rittman mead showcasing their "unify" product that helps enterprise integrate tableau with OBIEE. There are big gaps in DVD/VA capabilities compared to other market data viz tools and I am expecting other similar products like unify to fill in theserious gap in DVD/VA's roadmap/strategy.

I wish they'd get OBIEE closer....testing 12.2.1.2.170418 or whatever the latest and greatest is...and still don't even have the ability to have multiple dashboards. Seems like they're a full year behind with syncing OBIEE up with the DVD desktop version.

not really expecting DVD/VA to catchup with Tableau anytime soon but I hope DVD at least gets basic features that makes it practical to be used in enterprises.

As we all known there isn't anything more obscure than the future releases and roadmap of tool at Oracle
My feeling is that their late jump on the cloud market cannibalized resources everywhere else, and BI is the latest addition to cloud with the OAC service.
With some luck this also means they devs can jump back on the tools and start delivering what they were working on.
It's also normal you can't expect easily DVD/VA to catch up easily with Tableau which has been developed only for that (on the other hand Tableau isn't able to do what OBIEE does).
So you have the option: a "lighter" visualization tool using DVD/VA or put something else on top of OBIEE.

Yes a lot of the connectors are not fully fleshed out - even Oracle's own Essbase connector (and they really need a Hyperion connector that would leverage the metadata in the applications, such as Planning).
If they could get a data processing engine on the desktop and integrate everything a bit more, it'd be a killer product. The interface and ease of use is the main draw for me. It takes a lot longer to get going in the other tools from a data prep to fully built dashboard with visuals. Tableau has been laden down with a bunch of extras since it's started trying to be a tool for everyone and everything.

On the feature gap point - depends how you view (on paper vs reality). For example - On paper, DVD has big data support with spark, hive, impala etc but in reality there is no support for LDAP/Kerberos and push down processing so these connectors are pretty much useless. Even on relational databases, DVD chokes on moderate sized data sets. Hence I had mentioned earlier that its baffling to understand the product team's focus on adding new connectors with new DVD releases that look good on paper but not of much practical use. I hope they get fix what's already in the product before adding any more namesake features.

My wish list would be:
1. Connection to BI server so we can use OBIEE data without predefined analyses
2. Connection to BI server that can happen even through SSL web connections (https)
3. Ability to display on a dashboard
4. Some decent (and/or ANY) instructions on how to use mapping. For instance, maps work properly if I include US state code. But couldn't get to work with Sate + City, Zip codes, etc. I can't even seem to find instructions for either DVD or VA that shows what's possible.
Thx,
Scott
