On Premise Update to DV for 12.2.1.2

Content

We have recently installed on-premise OBI 12.2.1.2.20170718 and are licensed for DV embedded within OBI. It looks like the version of DV embedded is v1. Is there any plan from Oracle to bring this up to speed with OAC and DVD (to version 3)? Our users are already complaining about the difference in functionality between DVD and on-prem versions.

  • Hi,

I can't give you a date or any formal answer but just a global feeling of the strategy you can expect and this will let you guess when things will come (and if they are coming).

The strategy is clearly cloud first. So any new thing will be first released in OAC. The on prem side will come at a later step (so far it looks like it still will be released on prem, just later).

So if OAC is at a version 2 of DVD in term of functionality you can expect the same functionality to be released on prem at a later stage.

This is clearly a strategy choice and nothing you can change yourself. If you want to most update version you will need OAC, for on prem you can guess it will come at some point ...

More in general you probably know that with Oracle you will hardly get a commitment on a release date or something like that, so .... wait

I would also like to know this, as well as if the plan is to ever keep them more "in sync" with each other.  People want to be able to share their DV work online.  OBIEE on premise is the only way to do this, but with the feature gap, it's pretty much useless.

It looks like the cloud version of DVCS was recently updated with DVD v2 features..so my guess is this could easily be included in the new on-prem release, but who knows when!  It's actually odd that we haven't seen a new version above 12.2.1.2 yet, as it came out last October.  I guess we should expect only once a year updates for OBIEE.

  • FYI, I just see OBIEE 12.2.1.3 is available to download ...

No need to rush, for DV they doc just says:

There are no new Oracle Data Visualization features for this release.

Thank you Gianni. To me, it seems like the order for DV is:

    1. DVD

    2. OAC

    3. On Prem

So even if we had OAC, there would still be a disconnect in versions if users are developing on DVD first (v2 and v3 respectively). I think it is dangerous to roll out DVD to any user base outside of IT since there's no guarantee the .dva will import to OAC or On Prem for compatibility reasons, thus leaving the content local. I like the development paradigm of DVD->OAC down the road, but Oracle needs to ensure close parity of at least those two platforms in my mind.

  • Of course I can't speak for Oracle (there is at least one of the PM of DVD here on the forum and few more Oracle employee if they want to provide a more precise strategic view).

The theory of DVD was exactly what you said: be able to test and develop new features because DVD can be released more frequently. Then the functionality would join OAC and DVCS and only at a later point (maybe) OBIEE.

From a more practical point of view at the beginning DVD had some released which were more frequent than other tools. But lately DVD development seems a lot slower. Some hypothesis could be they had to move resources on the development and launch of OAC as it took a while to be available compared to many of the other cloud services.

So I really see the point of being sure about compatibility etc. Maybe it will get better when OAC will also get v3 and so DVD v3 will really be the new standard.

    Hi Gianni,

I just saw that 12.2.1.3 is available as well! Where did you find the document for new features? I cannot seem to locate it.

Lightweight SSO option came out in 12.2.1.2...it looks like they just copied the release notes from the prior version.  Someone just needs to install and see what the changes would be.

  • The light SSO is enabled by default, before it was an optional thing if you wanted to share the session between DV and OBIEE. I didn't see many things in the 12.2.1.3.0 OBIEE DV, it just looks like before but I also wasn't paying much attention to it.

  • Well .... there is still an option: the doc isn't up to date maybe ... (but even other Oracle documents says the new thing is the light SSO enabled by default and it's mainly a release to align code)
