DVD: All data files and customizations lost

Summary
DVD: All data files and customizations lost
Content
I am running the latest DVD (Version 54.0.2840.59) on MacOS High Sierra (macOS 10.13.3).
I have been using DVD happily for a while now, but when I started it up this morning, no data was available: I mean all the data files I uploaded, the connections I defined, the custom map layers I added - even the original sample data used by the sample project: all gone. When I start the sample project, it fails because data does not exist. I am also unable to upload any new data: DVD just hangs and needs killing and restarting.
I have had that behavior when I first installed it. Then I had to reboot the Mac because of some security update, and things worked fine after that.
So I also just rebooted the mac, and lo and behold, DVD works fine again: all my data and customizations are back.
Has anyone seen that ? I suspect some DVD background process had crashed unnoticed ? Are there any logs I can look at toi try and understand and isolate ?
