Having the possibility to paste a list of values in a prompt

Description

Having the possibility in DV to paste a list of values directly inside a prompt. Similar to the "edit" list icon in OBIEE classic prompt. This is required for analysts who need to copy a list of invoice numbers for example and paste it into a prompt.

Use Case and Business Need

For example we would need to have an option to copy and paste a list of countries instead of manually select them one by one.

This feature has been added to the product roadmap. We might communicate about the ETA via our official product roadmap page: https://community.oracle.com/products/oracleanalytics/kb/articles/32-product-roadmaps

  • This will be extremely helpful especially with executive demos. Thank you!

I would love to see this feature as well.

  • Have a predefined list of values instead of have to select them one by one in sometimes needed.

It would definitely match an usual need customers have (and are used to with other tools), to filter based on an external list of items.

  • This feature is extremely helpful to paste multiple values

  • This feature would be very useful for DV users.

  • Suggestion for work around: use an Expression Filter.

    Country IN ('Argentina', 'Armenia', 'Australia')

caveat: your users will need to learn the correct syntax. Single quotes, parenthesis, etc.

    HTH?

  • Thanks - great workaround!

This is probably not an approved solution by Oracle since they are trying to get rid of OBIEE (Classic) dashboards but I have gone with a hybrid approach. I create my DV report and put each canvas as a page on a classic dashboard. I then create a classic dashboard prompt using the same dataset and also put that on the dashboard. That allows you to be able to filter the DV report with the same functionality of classic style. You get the paste list of values option again and you also get to create saved customizations again. A little more work but gives my users the same dashboard experience with some of the enhanced features that DV brings.

  • Hello @Branden Pavol ,

Do we know this for a fact? ("...they are trying to get rid of OBIEE (Classic) dashboards..."). I have been trying to get an official answer from Oracle about that, without luck so far. Could you please provide a reference to that?

    TIA!

I will admit my Google-Fu is not strong enough. Shame on me.

I won't name any names but my Oracle reps have told me that they are not going to make any enhancements to Classic dashboards anymore and they are going to focus only on DV enhancements.

  • @Branden Pavol, your idea is definitely worth trying out - thanks for the alternate approach!

  • @Marcelo Finkielsztein Thanks for responding, I appreciate you offering an alternative. While using an expression filter will work for some, most of our end users might not find it as user friendly as they would need to make sure they had the syntax correct. See below for a couple of projects, imagine if they needed to paste in 40 values and add single quotes (') and commas ('). I would be concerned about typos. If they wanted to paste in hundreds of projects that would increase the chance of typo.

This is a very important enhancement request - Thanks @Benjamin Arnulf-Oracle for posting.

I use frequently copy the list and paste in OBIEE filters. It is much needed functionality.

There are many good functionalities in OBIEE and I am surprised why Oracle not considering before customer raises them?

@Rajakumar Burra This statement is incorrect and a wrong assumption.

Oracle and Product Management are considering a lot of different product enhancements, also based on Classic features. The process of including a feature in the product roadmap is managed by Product Management and based on multiple factors and criteria, at their discretion. The goal of the idea lab is to provide additional weight to feature prioritization. Thank you for your feedback. Happy to continue the discussion offline if needed.

  • Good Day @Rajakumar Burra

I understand that there are many functionalities in OAC Classic / OBIEE that isn't in DV. Product development has limited time and if we want them to focus on certain features, then we need to speak up with our needs. Oracle has added many features to DV in the past couple of years, but I there are still things I am looking to be implemented.

As a customer my advice it to take advantage of the Live Lab and look and see if others have posted some of you favorite features and vote on it. If it isn't there write a quick suggestion and put post it on social media. See if you can't get others to vote on it.

Speak up with specifics on what you are needing. If enough customers are looking the feature, it will get more attention from Oracle Product Management.

This is definitely a lacking feature in DV filtering. We frequently need to search by numerous customers IDs. We can do this in Answers (and could embed a DV in an Answers dashboard - but this doesn't really work for broader workbooks that we really want to present natively in DV).

Can someone from Oracle provide an update? @Benjamin Arnulf-Oracle - possibly you since you were the one to originally post this 3+ years ago. It sounds like Oracle understands this is a gap in functionality. It would be really great to have this bumped in priority.

  • HI Greg, the good news is that it is under review by Product Management. I think we need more votes to get it prioritized faster. I encourage anyone having contacts with Oracle Analytics users to share this URL and ask for votes if you think it's a good idea. Thank you!

  • @Benjamin Arnulf-Oracle

Thanks for the update. Does it matter if people from the same company vote on this idea?
