Thanks a lot guys I've already informed PM.

Edit: And the "accepted answer" being removed and moved up the thread is just useless UX. The page anchor is #latest so you miss every answer that is already accepted and contains crucial information.

Oh well…who said forums have to be user friendly and provide a workable environment ;)

  • Hi - just to be clear, session variables are not yet formally supported - technically the backend works, but the feature has not been fully certified and the front end correctly states that "session variables are not supported" - so the no-space between the equals sign should also not be validated but it appears to be a loophole in the validation that was not detected during testing. We will definitely announce when these session variables are supported formally.

Guys, I am really surprised that referencing repository/session variables in filter condition in role-based filters in data sets is possible - I have tried it on our OAS environment and it didn't work (only referencing USER function).

And that was the reason why I have created following Idea:

Question is, whether this is a) "intended" behavior or b) just a "unwanted hole in the code" From validation message I would say that b is valid….

  • @Michal Zima - please see my comment. Session variables are not supported in role based filters and what was experienced above by some users is not intended behavior. It is an un-intended loophole in our validation code. We have entered an issue to close this loophole, so recommendation is to not use this feature as it is not supported.

@Luis E. Rivas -Oracle , I know how the Oracle processes are, and that you will not give any date for when this will be officially supported.

But knowing what this "feature" allows, that it's a fundamental thing for any enterprise usage of datasets because that's what allows to have an equivalent of row-level security available in the semantic model, it would be much more beneficial to invest development time in finalizing tests and supporting it, instead of wasting time in closing the loophole.

Also knowing that OAS 2025 is around the corner, and the code and features that will be available in it are probably already defined, but missing this opportunity would be wasting 12 more months without having a key feature for datasets in the product (and I saw customers dropping Oracle Analytics and moving to competitors for less than that over the past years).

Just saying … (not expecting this to change anything, but still)

  • @Gianni Ceresa we are evaluating how to support it, but it is not clear when we can enable it. There are a lot scenarios for datasets which are different from how subject areas are used. We understand there are uses of session variables in datasets. Our goal is to ensure it works as intended when we enable it.

@Bret Grinslade - Oracle Analytics-Oracle Hi Bret, just one comment to your statement: "we are evaluating how to support it, but it is not clear when we can enable it". What about engaging into this process some experienced people from community ( @Gianni Ceresa , @Christian Berg-Oracle ….) ? This could help you to better understand needs/use-cases…. Btw, you owe me an answer to my email, I was sending to you on January 22. Thanks Michal

  • @Michal Zima @Gianni Ceresa : We will setup a separate meeting on this topic with you.

@Benjamin Arnulf-Oracle Thanks for setting this up and making sure that all stakeholders who can contribute are invited. Both of them are two of the key people you can use to get real life information on how the product is used at scale, in an enterprise fashion, and beyond the static one-person-self-service.
