Problem solved. In the Pivot Table properties, under Options, there is a drop down for Insert Page Break. Apparently, breaking pages on a specific column value creates tabs in Excel for each break, and titles the tab according to the header, which is the column value. To stop the new tabs in Excel, turn off the page break.
