Product Notice: Gmail Hard Bounces Dec 14 - 15th, 2020

On December 14th and 15th Google reported they experienced several outages with their Gmail service. As a result, Gmail incorrectly returned a hard bounce status code for valid recipients. The exact message was:

smtp;550 5.1.1 The email account that you tried to reach does not exist. Please try double-checking the recipient's email address for typos or unnecessary spaces. Learn more at https://support.google.com/mail/?p=NoSuchUser

If your Eloqua instance was sending to Gmail recipients during the outage window, Eloqua received a hard bounce from Gmail and marked those contacts invalid. Since those hard bounces were generated in error and in fact an email account does exist in Gmail, we have proactively updated all affected Eloqua sites and marked the contacts as valid.

No additional action is required from the customers, however, it is important to note that those contacts that were marked invalid were excluded in subsequent email send steps, so they would not have received any further emails until after the status was proactively reinstated on December 16th at 6:30 pm EST.
