How to handle overdue goals?

When there is an overdue goal in employee profile how to track it ? According to Oracle documents HR specialists can then manually copy these overdue goals to a new goal plan so that these goals can be tracked again. After an overdue goal is copied to a new goal plan, its status is set to Not Started in the new goal plan.
Is this the only way? Without copying them into a new goal plan is there any other way to handle them ?
