Late/Retro-active recording of absence

We are looking to see how others have handled the back-dating of absence recording? We are not running HCM Payroll but plan to integrate with our 3rd party payroll system.
I think 4 weeks retro-active is more than adequate limit but still causes issues at the close of a period. You will have to re-run your accruals and they could go negative etc,etc.
It also means that for unpaid leave, pay will have to be deducted in the current period for previous absence and the person may be on leave etc.
