How to access salary components

We have two salary data changes for the same effective date:  merit and adjustment.  We saw in a previous post, we could check a box for salary components to add both piece of data; however, in our system, we do not have this box available.  Is there something that needs to be enabled or a work around for this?  Any help is appreciated.
