Cannot create Check-In for indirect report

I am having an issue where I am logged in as a Managers Manager.  I am able to create Anytime documents for an indirect report but do not have the Add button present in the Check-In region.  If I click on the three dots alongside an employee in the performance overview screen, I am able to select 'Add Check-In Document' but when I get into the screen the Manager field is blank and I cannot update it like I can in an Anytime document.  

Is anybody else able to create Check-Ins for indirect reports?
