How do the work schedule assignments which are marked 'Primary' field as 'No' behave?

Work schedules assignments which have primary field as Yes will become worker availability and absences are also based on that. But why do we have primary field and if we mark primary field as No then are the work schedules used anywhere or its becoming inactive?
