Is there any way to update the Field Type in the Content Section Properties?

Summary:

Hi. We have a requirements to load a list of Employers for the Work History section of the Skills and Qualifications of an employee. The Employer Name is currently a Text field and we wanted to confirm if there was any way to make this a Lookup field type?
