Adding inventory from a parts catalog

Is there a way to select inventory from a parts catalog, then "add" the inventory without making it an actual "install_inventory" action? In other words we only want to populate inventory in a screen but without making it a true install_inventory. Example: Tech wants to make a list of parts that was found damaged on a machine. The tech would list one or more parts, but they are not parts actually installed in the machine.

Currently if I select a part from the Part Catalog, there is no option available to "add" the part.
