Changing "grade” or “grade step” via Compensation Plan

Hello everyone,
Is it possible to actually change an employee's “grade” or “grade step” in Core using the “New Grade” and “Proposed Grade Step” columns from a Workforce Compensation Plan?
What transaction would be triggered and what effect would this have?
Is there anything that needs to be taken into account during configuration?
