What is the correct way to stop and start a work requirement from generating preventive work orders

Summary: We have assets that go in and out of operation for a long period of time. What is the correct set of steps to take in order to "Pause" the generation of preventive work orders from the relevant work requirement? Can I simply end date the work requirement and then remove the end date at a later period?
